Learning Assistants in Physics
1. What is a Learning Assistant? (LA)
A Learning Assistant is a pedagogically trained peer that helps fellow students develop critical thinking skills by guiding discussion during labs. Have you ever had an ultra-productive study group, where everyone talks about their ideas and by the end, you’ve finished your homework and you’ve learned something deeply? That’s what you’re trying to facilitate in class!
LAs are different from tutors or TAs in that they do not necessarily explain, lecture, or create content for students. They ask thoughtful questions, provide guidance, and humanize the struggle of learning.

There are three important elements of the LA program: in-class practice, content preparation, and pedagogical training.
2. What are the requirements to be an LA in a Physics course?
All majors are welcome to apply! Applicants must:
- Have taken the course they wish to be an LA for (or equivalent)
- Have obtained a B or higher*
- Be in good academic standing (ie., not on probation)
- Be able to attend all content preparation and pedagogical training meetings
- Be reliable, a good communicator, responsive, and honest
- Provide 1 faculty member reference to speak to the above (can be a professor you’ve had for a class in which you’ve done well)
3. How do I apply?
Filling out an application is the first step. It will ask you about your course grades, the courses you’re interested in supporting, your schedule, and your attitudes and ideas about teaching and learning. Applications are sent approximately 6 weeks before of the quarter for each quarter.
After you submit your application, physics faculty will reach out to you to discuss scheduling, expectations, and may have a follow-up interview. Once you have a job offer from a physics faculty, you will receive follow-up instructions about the payroll process and pedagogical training.
If you are interested in becoming a Learning Assistant, fill in this brief Survey, so you will receive the announcement for the next hiring cycle.
